Client, the Beijing Underground Construction Group (BUCG), has ordered a Herrenknecht 6.2m diameter EPBM at a cost of $4.1million for construction of an underground section of line 5 of the Beijing metro. Machine delivery is expected in November 2000 and marks Herrenknecht’s first sale of a large machine to the growing Chinese market.
The complete length of Line 5 is 27.7km with 24 stations, and includes underground, surface and elevated sections, starting at Songjiazhuang in the South and ending at Taipinghuangbei Changping District in the North.
The underground section stretches 14.9km between Songjiazhuang-Beisanhuanly and will have 15 stations. The TBM will be used on five sections of the line from Dongdan to Yonghegong. Initially BUCG will bore a test tunnel between Beixinqiao and Yonghegong using the EPBM. Following successful test tunnel excavation, bidding will be undertaken for construction of the whole line.
Construction of the underground section will be through Quaternary clayey soil containing sand, broken stone and silt with a maximum particle size of 25mm. Underground water is between 6-10m. The internal diameter of the tunnel will be 5.4m with lining comprising a six piece segment ring wit each ring width being 1.2m.
Tunnelling is scheduled to start at the beginning of 2001.
