A small adit is being excavated in a remote part of Arctic Norway to hold an international seed vault to help ensure the longterm survival and re-establishment of the world’s food crops in the event of major disaster. The Norwegian government and the Global Crop Diversity Trust have spearheaded efforts to establish a ‘seed repository of last resort’ carved into rock and permafrost. The vault will have a capacity of three million samples and will be located on an island 1,000km north of the northernmost tip of mainland Norway. The remoteness assists security plus climate changes should be slower for future stability.
