The 1.65km-long tunnel is located in the municipality of San Lorenzo Maggiore, in the province of Benevento.
The Telese Scarl Consortium, comprising Ghella, Itinera, Salcef, and Coget Impianti, have now completed excavation of four tunnels on this section – San Lorenzo, Reventa, Limata, and Ponte tunnels.
The San Lorenzo Tunnel is the second longest in the Telese–Vitulano section and was built using traditional methods combined with innovative techniques to address the specific geological characteristics of the terrain, said Ghella.
The works were commissioned by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, under the supervision of Italferr.
The Naples-Bari high-speed, high-capacity line will stretch over 145km and include 15 tunnels, 25 viaducts, and 20 stations and stops along the route. The project is part of the TEN-T Scandinavian–Mediterranean European railway corridor.
