Sharjah will complete the first phase of the Al Taawun Tunnel in November 2026, with full project completion expected by February 2027, according to the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA).
The Al Taawun Tunnel, under construction at Al Taawun Square, will comprise three lanes in each direction and is designed to accommodate up to 4,000 vehicles per hour during peak periods.
The development aims to improve traffic flow between Sharjah and Dubai by providing a more direct connection via Al Taawun towards Al Nahda and Dubai, while also alleviating congestion and reducing waiting times for motorists by as much as 85%.
As of 28 July 2026, construction on the tunnel had reached 20%, with work taking place around the clock.
The authority stated that the first phase includes not only the tunnel itself but also two connecting roads leading to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. These elements are scheduled to be completed together in November 2026.
The update on the project’s status was announced during the “Direct Line” programme on Sharjah TV.
The Al Taawun Tunnel is part of a broader programme to upgrade major traffic corridors between Sharjah and Dubai. The wider scheme also involves works around Al Taawun, Al Khan and multiple main intersections that feed into Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
SRTA has positioned the tunnel project as a core component of its efforts to improve the emirate’s main routes and overall mobility infrastructure.
The overall project is a response to growing traffic needs and is intended to deliver increased efficiency and enhanced connectivity between Sharjah and Dubai’s transport networks. No further technical details or construction partners were disclosed in the announcement.
