The Herrenknecht EPB shield TBM, which has a diameter of 5.94m, broke through after excavating a 2.24km-long tunnel.
The tunnel will house two new, 1,400m-diameter steel pipes. They will connect the existing raw water pipe to the new water plant.
Last year, Herrenknecht delivered a 14.9m vertical shaft sinking machine to prepare the 34m-deep launch shaft for this TBM.
Once completed, the project will supply 400,000m³ of high-quality water per day to the Pudong New Area, improving drinking water quality and strengthening supply security for several towns in the region.
