FS Italiane has awarded Webuild and its subsidiary, Cossi Construzioni, a €117m contract to build the Mondovi Bypass in Piedmont.

The 3km-long project, part of State Road SS28 del Colle di Nava, includes construction of the 1.4km San Lorenzo Tunnel, the 240m-long Ellero viaduct and an artificial tunnel.

The viaduct will be a smart infrastructure, with IoT-enabled sensors to transmit real-time data on deck stability and hydrogeological conditions of the river below.

The new road will improve connections between the A6 Turin–Savona Highway and the valleys of the Cuneo area.

Webuild says the construction site minimise the environmental footprint through a circular-economy system with full recovery and reuse of water. A network of digital sensors will optimise water and energy consumption, while mobile barriers will reduce dust dispersion.

Particular attention will be given to local wildlife. In addition to acoustic and visual deterrents to keep animals away from work areas, the project will provide temporary wildlife crossings.
