The positioning of the fourth concrete segment for the Middle East’s immersed tunnel is under way in Iraq.
The Basra Tunnel, being built at Al Faw Grant Port for the General Company of Ports, is being positioned under the Khor Al-Zubair Channel. It will run under the Shatt al-Arab waterway, connecting Al Faw Grand Port with an international highway.
The company’s director-general, Dr Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, said submerging the fourth segment completed approximately 693m of the tunnel’s total length, including the Um Qasr approach, “marking significant progress in the project’s execution timeline”.
The completed tunnel will comprise 10 segments.
The Basra Tunnel is one of five major engineering projects at Al Faw Grand Port. It is part of a strategic plan to develop Iraq’s transport infrastructure and enhance its capacity for international trade movements.
