Since coming into the Robbins fold, Contractors has continued to deliver machines that tackle the toughest jobs, whether designing a machine for a complex job, troubleshooting a difficult ground condition or sending technicians to a job site.
Its heavy duty directional drills, claimed to be the largest and most powerful on the market, range from the light capacity CMS1510TMSC which can drill 183m in soft soil or rock to the high capacity CMS36030TLMNC which can drill down 1830m. All drills have rack and pinion carriage travel system for highest efficiency and fast two speed carriage travel.
The Robbins group also manufactures Small Boring Units (SBUs) at 610-1830mm dia.

Euro Iseki, established in 1981 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Iseki Poly-Tech Inc. of Japan, pioneered the introduction of microtunnelling internationally selling over 2500 machines to date.
Iseki focuses on the supply of small and medium diameter tunnelling systems with closed face slurry machines of 200-3000mm i.d. for sale and rental.
With the increasing demand for machines to cope with the widest variety of ground conditions, Iseki have maintained development of its Unclemole Super TCS system. This has been specifically designed to excavate in variable mixed ground conditions including rock. The tunnelling shield combines the use of roller and cutter discs together with the unique patented Iseki crushing action to process material up to 150 MPa unconfined compressive strength. This type of shield has been supplied in diameters of 350 to 2400mm i.d. Recent sales have included one TCS 400mm i.d. shield to a customer in Italy and a TCS 1200mm i.d. for a project in South Wales.

Herrenknecht provides a comprehensive service to the microtunnelling industry with products in a range of diameters for use in slurry and EPB modes.
The popular AVN series ranges from the AVN 250 up to the AVN 1200 TC. All feature a full face cutting machine, open mode wheels with hardfacing that can be equipped with metal picks, ripper chisels or spade type cutting teeth, depending on soil conditions. Cutter discs can be fitted to the head for pipe-jacking. Excavation diameters range from 368mm up to 1.96m. Also available from Herrenknecht is the T and D series slurry shield machines. The 1.8m diameter AVN 1500T has a retention length through rock of over 500m made possible as roller bits can be replaced. This reduces the number of intermediate shafts thereby reducing costs. The D series slurry machines range from the 1600 D with a diameter of 1.98m to the 2400 D with a 2.8m diameter. The D series features a Hydroshield that is better deployed in variable soils. EPB shield machines are also available primarily for use in soft ground. Excavated material stabilises the face whilst an auger conveys soils away into an extraction chamber.

Hütte’s robust directional drill rig HBR 206 D carries out controlled drilling economically and powerfully, the company says, and without major upheavals to the environment.
Fitted with a modern, easy to operate hydraulic system, all movements of the crawler drill can be controlled precisely from the operator’s console.
For the D-20 and D-40, respectively, weight of the standard rig is 10.9kg and11.6kg; drives are 104kW and 150kW; traction motor force is 120kN and 160kN; speed 3km/h for both and climbing ability 84% = 40o; drill boom length is 7.5m for both; and thrust of the drill boom is 100kN and 260kN, and drill boom pullback 200kN and 380kN.

Lovat mts (micro tunnelling systems) was founded last year and is located in Valluhn, Germany, around 50km east of Hamburg. It specialises in the development, manufacture and servicing of microtunnelling systems. The company also offers full support for Lovat TBMs in Europe as well as Lovat mts machines worldwide.
There are currently three product lines available, ranging from 150mm to 2,000mm i.d.
The mts 400 is a efficient and simple auger tunnelling system for diameters of 150 to 400mm i.d. The mts 1000 has a diameter range of 250mm to 1,000mm i.d. and is designed for mechanical as well as hydraulic spoil removal, via auger or slurry. The mts 2000 is designed for demanding long distance and curved tunnelling of 250mm to 2,000mm i.d.
The machines are of modular design and use many common components, simplifying diameter conversions.

Symmetrix is a simple concentric method of drilling through overburden with casing from Finnish company Rotex. It can drill straight holes at any angle from vertical to horizontal equally effectively and to depths over 100m.
A pilot bit is attached to the ring bit with a bayonet coupling. Both rotate to cut a hole large enough to allow the casing shoe to pull down the casing pipe. Casing pipes are added as required down to more than 100m.
The flushing air is ejected through the holes in the face of the pilot bit and returns to the annulus ensuring high flushing speed. When the hole is complete the pilot bit is unlocked and withdrawn through the casing pipe, which can also be retrieved.
Drilling can be continued using a standard bit. The pilot bit is attachable to any common down the hole hammer shank or top hammer road thread.

The Schmidt, Kranz & Co Perforator thrust boring machines are designed for auger boring with simultaneous pipe jacking to facilitate construction of underground pipelines where open cutting would result in disruption of traffic and services and in cases where damage to the local environment needs to be minimised.
The series features the PBA 200/85 with Optic Electronic Navigation for exact steering of pilot rods with a thrust of 850kN and a torque of 95kNm.
The Micro Tunnelling Machine is for remote controlled and unmanned operations. Machines range from 560-2000mm o.d, with applications ranging from laying of drainpipes to creating tunnels. The system features short installation periods, maximum boring time and easy handling.

Vermeer of the US has introduced the D150x300 Navigator horizontal directional drill, the first in the 50kg class with a fully integrated climate controlled operator’s station.
The machine was designed to minimise support equipment and maximise operator efficiency – all functions, including transport, drilling controls, crane and drilling fluid controls are operated from the operator’s station.
Other new developments from the company include the SA300 pumping station which can be used with mud motors, rock hole openers, or where higher flows are needed with larger backreams. The V120 utility trencher/plough now offers an optional hydraulic sliding offset rockwheel attachment.

This survey technology company was founded in 1994 to supply tailor-made designs, services and survey systems for tunnelling. Innovative methods are offered which do not disturb or interrupt the production process.
A major aspect has been the development of specific systems for TBM pipe jacking as well as segmentally lined tunnels. The equipment is available globally.
VMT also offers classical survey services In co-operation with associated surveying and engineering companies, VMT will also take care of special work such as GPS measurements for geodetic network or high precision theodolite measurements for bearing control.
VMT uses the most modern and most exacting survey components to guarantee a high level of accuracy, safety and flexibility.

ZED Instruments manufactures a range of guidance systems, intended for use on small bore TBMs and with pipe-jacked tunnels. Guidance data for steering and control maybe displayed on the machine for man-entry operation or remotely on the surface.
System complexity is dependent on whether line of sight is maintained from the launch pit to the TBM and the maximum length of straight drive. Low cost solutions suit straight drives less than 200m long. Equipment comprises a target in the shield, a standard tunnelling laser in the launch pit, a cable or radio modem link out of the tunnel, and ZED software running on a customer supplied PC on the surface.
For drives up to 600m the recently developed non-laser reference technology, with a TCA Total Station is an option.
If the line of sight is not maintained with the jacking pit, laser based systems are mounted within, and travel with, the jacked pipe. Again the TCA Total Station is used and allows greater separation between the component parts of pipe-jacking systems thereby reducing conventional survey work.
