This week TBM Peacock (DL 1074), operated by ITD Cementation India Ltd, broke through to arrive at the Kodambakkam ramp retrieval shaft near Meenakshi College after completing the project’s longest drive.
CMRL says the achievement marks a major step forward in the development of Corridor 4, which will span 26.8km from Light House to Poonamallee Bypass.
TBM Peacock was launched in May last year to bore the 2.047km section from Panagal Park Crossover to the retrieval shaft.
The main challenge was the alignment passed below 190 buildings. The majority were residential and more than 50 were old buildings. The TBM also had to bore parallel to an active railway line before crossing the multiple railway tracks, beneath two churches and the Kodambakkam flyover.
Phase II is a 118.9km network comprising three corridors with 128 stations. Corridor 4 is a 26.1km stretch from Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass with 12 underground stations and 18 elevated stations. The 10.03km underground section from Lighthouse Station to Kodambakkam Flyover is being executed by ITD Cementation India Ltd using four TBMs.
