The £5.5m project aims to improve water quality in Wrongway Brook, which is a tributary of the River Ribble.
When complete, the 300m-long tunnel will hold more than two million litres of stormwater. It will give Kirkham’s wastewater network additional capacity during heavy rainfall and help to improve water quality in Wrongway Brook by reducing storm water discharges.
The tunnel will be lie more than 4m below ground.
The United Utilities project is part of a wider £94.5m investment in 12 projects across Fylde and Wyre during the next five years.
The first phase of the project will involve upgrading the sewer network with the introduction of larger pipes. The work is due to be completed by summer next year.
