Underground transport is the speciality of Atlas Copco Wagner Division, with its Scooptram range of load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles and range of high-capacity mine trucks. Effective from 1st July, the Atlas Copco CMT USA sales company became the sole contact for Wagner in the USA, being the final stage in a two year transition of representation from Wagner in Portland, Oregon.
The latest development in the mine truck range is a refined 50-t MT 5010, the first two have already been delivered to Australia. The new version has a larger cabin for trainer comfort and better ergonomics. It also has a simply designed and easily maintained air-conditioning system, and improved instrumentation including monitoring of hydraulic and lubrication systems. Maintenance is further simplified with improved access to main components. The use of the Spicer 53R300 series axles gives greater capacity, reliability and performance.
Wagner 4-wheel drive Scooptram LHDs are available with diesel engine or electric power in a wide range of capacities, from the 1.4t capacity HST 1A to the 15t payload ST1520.

Continental Conveyor provides all the handling equipment necessary for muck and spoil handling associated with tunnelling projects. Products are specifically engineered to smooth the transport of materials from TBM to surface and beyond. The High Angle Conveyor (HAC) has solved many high capacity, steep angle conveying problems, up to and including 90o vertical lift. The Continental Conveyor HAC system employs standard conveyor components and a simple but unique sandwich principle, which overcomes the limitations typically encountered with many traditional methods of conveying.
The HAC has proved itself to be extremely cost effective in a variety of high angled applications. The HAC technology was recently installed in a civil engineering contract awarded to Continental Conveyor from Burrows Brother (Sales) via contractor JV Morgan Vinci. This system will be used at the surface water outfall extension (SWOT) at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 project.

The C series tracked jaw crushers from Extec have been designed and tested using the latest CAD technology. The C series encompass features such as a vibratory feeder with automatic control to regulate the feed into the crusher; a hydraulic adjustment system to regulate the product size to be crushed; reverse crushing action to assist in clearing blockages; and a high crushing speed. All of which gives high production, cleaner products and more profit.
The Impactor, based on the successful C-12, is yet another example of Extec’s commitment to R&D, marrying the latest technology with user requirements.

Mühlhäuser produces a wide range of rolling stock and materials handling equipment. The range includes track bound haulage equipment, as well as supply cars and service equipment.
For the Alp Transit Gotthard tunnels, a new remixer for concrete transport was designed and built. The car has a length of 9.8m, width of 1.6m, height of 2.3m and drum dimensions of 16m3. It is equipped with 2 high quality disc-braked bogies. Running into the tunnel with 4 cars, 48m3 of concrete are transported per trip. The agitating of the concrete is powered from the locomotive in an alternating cascade system.
Also designed for the Alp Transit Gotthard tunnels, is the largest Rotadump Car, with 25m3 capacity. The muck cars run in a 10-car-train and are tipped into a completely remote controlled PROmec Rotadump System with 2 lines for each 5 car set.

Compact dimensions combined with high output: This is the principle on which KramerAllrad has based the new 380 and 480 wheel loaders. The loaders are equipped with intelligent hydrostatic drive as a standard. The option of the new ‘Ecospeed’ 40kph high-speed gearbox gives users more flexibility. KramerAllrad’s 380 and 480 machines set new standards with the fully glazed cab, the largest one in this vehicle category. Windows reach far down and offer excellent all around visibility.
Should it not be possible to access work in spite of the low vehicle height of 2.5m, the cab can easily be removed. Both machines have a width of 1.7m, making them ideal for confined construction sites. Together with the features Kramer is renowned for, four wheel steering and undivided frame, the 380 and 480 come with impressive manoeuvrability and stability. The 480 is also available in telescopic version.

Swiss conveyor and muck recycling specialist Marti Technics has installed 24km of conveying systems altogether from the Amsteg lateral adit at the new Alptransit railway crossing under the Gotthard. In Faido, a first conveyor carries the muck from the end of the lateral adit to the surface by means of a 2.7km conveyor. From that point, a second conveyor measuring 5km carries the excavation spoil outside to the final dump in Cavienca.
At the south portal in Bodio, Marti Technics supplied the unloading hall for two muck lines, where a system flips over the muck cars, and two conveyors to carry the spoil to the screening and crushing plant. Also, a 4.5km belt crosses an existing tunnel to the final disposal site in Buzza di Biasca. Altogether, Marti Technics has supplied the Gotthard base tunnel project with some 36km of conveying systems consisting of 22 conveyor sections to haul 14.4M tons of excavation spoil.
Marti Technics believes it has gained such wide experience on such a mammoth tunnelling project in so little time that it is now capable of handling the study, design, making, installation, and management of heavy-duty conveyors, logistics equipment and muck processing facilities for both major projects and smaller tunnels.

When it comes to tunnelling, machines do not have to look good, but need to work under all conditions. The Paus PMKT series dump trucks are real workhorses: strong in design, yet simple. No electronics have been used in the truck and this is the key to its reliability. All controls are hydraulical/mechanical, which makes maintenance very easy. The truck features an open canopy (optional closed cab) and a 180° rotating drivers seat with two separate control panels for each direction. The PMKT truck is available with capacities of 8m3, 10m3 and 12m3 (15t, 20t and 25t) and is powered by the Deutz 1013 series engine. Usually for tunneling, it is equipped with common soot filter systems like Engelhardt DPX.

Although rail-bound mucking systems remain the correct choice for some buyers, many of today’s tunnelling projects incorporate continuously advancing conveyor systems (from TBM to portal) that are setting world records for advance rates and low project cost. The Robbins Company offers both mucking systems. Robbins conveyor systems deliver rock through straight or curved tunnels, incline or decline, through portal or up the shaft. The company’s continuous conveyor systems have been employed successfully on more than 25 projects and over the last year have been supplied to projects in the US, Europe, Australia and the Far East.
Robbins conveyors are truly “continuously advancing” and require shut down only to add belt to the system, generally at increments of >250m of tunnel advance.
Robbins’ also offers a line of muck cars, concrete agitator cars, personnel cars and other rolling stock.

The central demands on a back-up installation can be expressed as: All the material to be transported in or out of the tunnel has to be conveyed at the lowest possible costs, in the required quantity, to the required place. Rowa Tunneling Logistics develop and manufacture highly engineered back-up installations with optimised supply and waste disposal, according to customer requirements.
Safety in the work place is the highest priority. By mechanising the work environment, many of the problems associated with complex building processes can be efficiently solved. Either for headings driven by TBMs or drill and blast, Rowa back-up installations separate working spaces, infrastructure and transport slopes. The increased performance is mirrored by the resulting higher safety standards.
A higher degree of mechanisation or partial automation results in constant, repetitive work sequences and a possible reduction of physical work and subsequent accidents.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is one of the biggest tunnelling challenges in Europe. With a tunnel length of 2 x 57km, a large quantity of locomotives are needed. Schöma has successfully secured the locomotive supply orders for the project’s Bodio/Faido, Amsteg and Sedrun lots.
The locomotives for the Bodio/Faido lot have been in operation since the end of 2002. These have been designed to the JV’s specification and are equipped with: Engine output 350kW; Particulate filter system for diesel engine; PLC control with CAN BUS communication; Operation in multi-traction and wheel slide protection; Automatic fire suppression system; Special control circuit for sequential drive of mortar mixers; Additional control panel installed in man-riding cars to operate the locomotives.
