Dramix steel wire fibres have been manufactured by NV Bekaert S of Belgium for almost 35 years and are used in many construction applications worldwide
The original feature of end hooks for greater anchorage and the gluing into bundles is, according to Bekaert, “still the main reason why this product is the most widely used in the underground environment today”.
The main feature that relates to performance is the length-to-diameter ratio and this determines the volume of fibres per kilogram. There are three main “aspect ratios” – 45, 65 and 80, with 80 being the most performance-based fibre.
Dramix is used both in sprayed concrete linings (generally these fibres are 30mm and 35mm in length) and in pre-cast segmental lining.
Recent projects include sections of Channel Tunnel Rail Link in London; the Terminal 5 project at London Heathrow Airport; the new metro line in Madrid, Spain and Beacon Hill and San Vicente, both in the USA.
