Construction is expected to start next year on a US$295M 9km rail tunnel connecting Beijing’s western railway station with the city’s central railway station. The tunnel, with twin bores each of about 8m diameter, will be a dedicated link without any intermediate stations.

The scheme has been approved and is due to be completed in time for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Millions of people each year transfer between the stations, causing traffic congestion in the area.
