After four months, the TBM “Lewis” has broken through after successfully crossing the Willamette River as part of Portland’s “Big Pipe” combined stormwater and sewage overflow scheme in the United States.
The 4.8m diameter machine has installed a 4.3m internal diameter precast concrete lining as it advanced. Talking to the press, a Portland City engineer said: “We’ve crossed the river without any problems.”
