Bilfinger Berger has been awarded a US$435M contract to build the new ‘Wehrhahnline’ subway in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Lot 1 contract involves construction of new 3.4km long subway line with five of the six new stations to be built on the line. The contract will be constructed in two section, the south and east, the former holding three stations and the latter two, respectively.

The single tube, twin-track rail tunnel is to be excavated by TBM with concrete lining (7+1) of 8.3m i.d. and 450mm segment thickness. The shield drives will be 1.3km in the south section and 1km in the east section through sands and gravels.

Station construction will involve box excavation with walls sunk up to 35m below the surface. Construction work in the dense urban environment will also require significant volumes of compensation grouting.

The new line is being built to replace a series of surface connections and is scheduled to come into service in 2015. A separate contract, Lot 2, will deal with the sixth station, which will interchange with that of an existing line.
