The Rio de Janeiro state governor has signed a letter of intent with Opportrans, which operates the metro for Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), to fund the $103m extension to Line 1 to Rua Siquera Campos in Copacabana. In exchange, Opportrans will transfer its monthly concession payment of $518 000 to BNDES. The extension will open in 2002.
