The Brenner Base Tunnel between the Sill Gorge and Pfons is now continuously connected after a breakthrough on May 20.
The breakthrough on the main west tunnel by the Implenia-Webuild joint venture means both main tunnels of the two construction lots H41 Sill Gorge-Pfons and H21 Sill Gorge are now connected for about 14km.
Around 3.4km of tunnels, up to 400m deep, were excavated through the Viller Berg mountain using drill and blast.
The first breakthrough to connect the two lots was made in September last year.
Works for H41 Sill Gorge-Pfons, in the northern area of the BBT between the Sill Gorge of Innsbruck in the north and Pfons in the south, began in mid-January 2022 with the set-up of the construction site. Excavation works started in July 2022 towards Innsbruck with the lowering of the cross-chamber slab.
Porr was responsible for H21 Sill Gorge, south of Innsbruck, and from August 2020 until December 2024 carried out the works to connect the northern end of the BBT and the central station in Innsbruck.
