Mu Guiying, a tunnel boring machine named after a fabled Chinese female warrior, has started excavating the 3.3m diameter, 3.2km Chi Ma Wan tunnel that is being built by Dragages Hong Kong for CLP Power. When completed by next February, the tunnel will carry high voltage power cables between Tai Long Wan, on Lantau IslandÕs Chi Ma Wan peninsula, and Cheung Chau island.

Mu Guiying lived during ChinaÕs Sung dynasty (1271-1368) when the country was facing invasion. She led an army to fight when she was pregnant and famously gave birth to her son on the battlefield. Dragages said the TBM was named after the woman warrior for its spirit of dedication and victory.
