On February 21 this year, Shanghai Tunnel Shareholding Co. started tunnelling on a second metro line in Guangzhou, the Guangdong provincial capital in southern China. A TBM began boring a 190m tunnel under the Pearl River from the site of Haizhu Square Station on Phase 1 of the $1.3bn underground line. Line 2 will be 23.3km long and have 22 stations. The first phase is due to be finished in 2002, with completion of the overall project due in 2004.
