Mott MacDonald has won an ISPA-funded contract to oversee the construction of 21km of tunnels in the Czech city of Brno.
Instrument for Structural Policies for Pre-Accession (ISPA), is a European Union (EU) financial instrument designed to assist candidate countries in preparing for accession to the EU.
ISPA funds will account for US$19.7M of the total US$42.8M contract to improve the sewerage and drainage systems in Brno, the Czech Republic’s second largest city, to meet EU directives. The Brno authorities are providing the remaining US$23.1M.
The cut and cover tunnels will be approximately 3.7m wide and 4m high, between 3.5m and 4m below ground level. The geology is typically Neogene clay overlain with silts and sediments of sand and gravel.
The contractor is S&K Brno, comprising Sub Terra, ZF Brno, Metrostav, and Imos.
ISPA funds of US$1.2bn will be made available between 2000 and 2006 for infrastructure projects – particularly the trans-European transport networks.
