The Danish Ministry of Transport is currently conducting a preliminary study for the construction of two new lines for the Copenhagen metro in Denmark.

Known as Cityring, the lines, M3 and M4, are in the early stages of design. At 14km long, and with 16 stations, the lines will service the major areas of the city not already covered by the first three stretches of the metro: Østerbro, Nørrebro, Frederiksberg and Vesterbro.

Although nothing is finalised, the estimated US$1.5bn project is likely to be constructed using TBMs similar to the two used on the city’s previous metro tunnels. EPBMs will therefore bore 5.5m diameter twin tunnels through limestone, typical of the geology of Copenhagen.

The study should be completed by the end of 2003, but public opinion is said to be behind the plans following the success of M1 and M2. Estimates put the earliest opening of the line at 2010.
