The 91m-long EPBM, operated by civil contractor Afcons, broke through at Tughlakabad Railway Colony Station yesterday after boring a 792m-long tunnel.

Two parallel tunnels for up and down movement are being constructed on this stretch as part of the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor.

The new tunnel was constructed at an average depth of approximately 18m. About 559 rings were installed in the tunnel, which has an inner diameter of 5.8m.

The breakthrough follows similar recent milestones. Excavation of the 792m tunnel between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Tughlakabad Railway Colony Station, and the 1.55km tunnel between Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj Station was completed in June.

As part of the Phase 4 work approved so far, 40.109km of underground lines are being constructed. The Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor has underground sections totalling 19.343km.
