Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an urban road upgrade that will include construction of three tunnels.
The project, which will upgrade Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road, will include four bridges and three tunnels over a combined length of 4.1km.
The tunnels will be built at three of the six key intersections along Umm Suqeim Street to improve traffic flow on surface-level roads.
Additional improvements include widening the road to four lanes between First Al Khail Street and Al Asayel Street, which will require the construction and widening of two flyovers.
The works are part of a major upgrade to Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Emirates Road, ultimately providing 20km of uninterrupted traffic flow from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road. The ongoing project will increase Umm Suqeim Street’s capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
RTA is currently advancing works on a 4.6km section of Umm Suqeim Street, stretching from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This phase includes the redevelopment of the intersection at Al Barsha South, with the construction of an 800m tunnel comprising four lanes in each direction, along with a surface-level intersection. Works are more than 70% complete and the section is scheduled to open in the third quarter of this year.
