Skanska has been awarded a US$127M contract by Amtrak to refurbish the ventilation and safety systems of the four East River tunnels in New York where a fire last September stranded thousands of Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) commuters.
Slattery Skanska, a business unit within Skanska USA Civils will lead the project which involves replacing the entire ventilation system and adding new shafts to improve both air supply and potential smoke clearance. Work will start this month and is scheduled to be complete by 2009.
Skanska Slattery is nearing completion on a similar project worth US$25.4M that it won in August 2002, also from Amtrak, for tunnels in New Jersey.
