Excavation of the Brenner Base Tunnel has reached the 200km mark – around 87% of the total distance.
The first 100km were completed in 2019.
Today, in Italy all three Italian TBMs have completed their drives to the Italian border and work on the H71 Isarco Underpass section has also been finished. On the Austrian side H52 Hochstegen and H21 Sill Gorge construction sites have been completed.
The 200km of tunnels excavated so far include 96km of main tunnels, 57km of exploratory tunnel, and 47km of other tunnels, such as safety, logistics, and cross-passages.
Traditional excavation continues toward the Brenner Pass.
Attention is now focused on the exploratory tunnel, located 10-12m below the two main tunnels: just over 200m remain to reach the Brenner Pass on the Austrian side.
BBT SE directors Gilberto Cardola and Martin Gradnitzer highlighted the strong team spirit o the project.
“The 200km excavation milestone confirms, once again, that one of Europe’s most ambitious infrastructure projects is progressing in the right direction. Today, we are even closer to our major goal: to build a continuous and efficient railway tunnel under the Brenner Pass,” they said.
