The organisation said the incident occurred around 2pm when a 41-year-old Polish construction worker was struck by an excavator shovel and suffered a head injury. He was working in the portal area on the construction site in Puttgarden, Germany, where drainage work is under way.

Emergency services responded immediately, but the man died at the scene. His family has been notified.

The accident is now under investigation by the relevant German authorities, and the construction companies involved. Following the incident, all employees on site were offered psychological crisis counselling.

“Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased during this difficult time. The safety of our workers is of utmost importance during the construction of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel. We will await the findings of the authorities’ investigation and any potential recommendations,” said Femern A/S CEO Henrik Vincentsen.
