Under the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between Dr Martin Herrenknecht and Etihad Rail CEO Shadi Malak, the Germany-based company will train young Emirati engineers at its Herrenknecht Academy in Schwanau, Germany. The aim is to create a knowledge exchange that will see the Emirati students gain the necessary knowledge and skills to increase their theoretical and vocational capabilities in tunnelling.
Furthermore, cooperation between the two companies will aim to optimise the design and construction of the UAE’s rail tunnels, as well as evaluate the feasibility of tunnel projects and mechanised tunnelling technologies.
Etihad Rail was set up in June 2009 to manage the development, construction and operation of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) national rail network covering both freight and passenger services.
