Impregilo has emerged as the front-runner for the Karahnjukar hydropower project in Iceland, after submitting the lowest bids for both the dam and tunnel construction.
T&TI reported on the proposed project last month, which includes about 65km of tunnels. Impregilo submitted a bid for US$231.38M for the dam construction, and US$289.23M for the tunnel construction. A 3% discount was offered if both contracts were won.
The two other tunnel bids came from Balfour Beatty (in conjunction with Pihl & Sön, and Istak), and Eurohydro JV (Hochtief and Icelandic Prime Contractors), which bid US$546.58M and US$426.16M respectively. Eurohydro JV also bid US$406.1M for dam construction, and offered a 3% discount for both.
Skanska, NCC and Vinci all backed out of the project before the final bids were due in.
