Contractors have until 4 May to submit expressions of interest and tenders for the excavation of the 3.4km long Jökulsá Tunnel, which forms part of the Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project in eastern Iceland (p39). The 6m diameter tunnel will be excavated using drill and blast techniques to allow the harnessing of two glacial rivers for a 690MW generation capacity. The contract has been scheduled to last from August 2004 until June 2008. Submissions must be in English and remain valid for 182 days, with selection being dependent upon the client’s choice of the most economically advantageous submission.
