The proposed GBP 4.1bn (USD 6.6bn) tunnel is expected to affect several communities along the 24 mile (38.6km) route running west to east London from Acton to Abbey Mills. People living at one of the three main drive sites chosen by Thames Water will be affected by the work.

Progress on the proposed sewer reaches a critical stage in January when Thames Water submits a 45,000-page planning application for the project.

The current Victorian sewer system cannot cope with London’s rising population and there is no alternative but to build a replacement, Thames Water has said. The supersewer will store untreated water and flush it east to the Abbey Mills pumping station. This will result in a cleaner, healthier Thames.
