The walkway would not be wide enough for bikers to ride their bikes through that area. The Capital Crescent Trail tunnel is too narrow to allow side-by-side access for the trail and Purple Line. A design that would have placed the train under the trail was estimated to cost approximately USD 51M.

The Bethesda station is planned as part of the Purple Line, a USD 1.9bn, unfunded light rail that has been in discussion for more than two decades. Construction on the proposed 16 mile (25.7km) light rail line extending from New Carrollton in Prince George’s County to Bethesda in Montgomery County is expected to start in 2014 and be completed in 2020.
