A swathe of refurbishment work is scheduled for the UK’s road tunnels following the Highways Agency‘s (HA) decision to comply with the impending European directive on tunnel safety for tunnels on the Trans-European Road Network (TERN). Many tunnels earmarked in the UK for upgrades are not on the TERN, but the HA wants commonality across its network.
One of the first tunnels to receive an upgrade is the 70 year-old 3.6km long Queensway tunnel, which crosses under the River Mersey, linking Liverpool and Birkenhead.
