Developer Sirius Minerals wants to mine on land near Whitby and build a 37km tunnel to a processing plant in Teesside. The North York Moors National Park Authority will consider the planning application on 30 June.
A report published earlier this month suggested the five-year construction phase of the mine would cost the area’s tourism industry GBP 10M a year.
Authorities said the mine represented the biggest inward investment in North Yorkshire for decades and would be critical in helping diversify the area’s economy.
