Granite Halmar, a wholly owned subsidiary of Granite Construction Incorporated, has been awarded a US$49.8M underground vent structure project by the New York City Transit Authority.

Work is due to commence in February, roughly 4,969m³ of material, mostly bedrock, will be excavated as part of the contract, to a depth of 15.2m. The first 4.8m is made up of miscellaneous fill materials, whereas the remaining 10.4m is expected to comprise of Manhattan schist. No significant groundwater problems are expected, surface runoff only is predicted.

Pile soldiers with timber lagging and steel bracing will be used to support the ground around the excavation for the reinforced concrete structures. Work should be complete by August 2008.
