Contractor, Comol Tunnelbouw Pannerdensch Kanaal will start TBM tunnelling at the end of next month on the $200M, 2.7km long Pannerdensch tunnel, part of the Betuweroute east-west high speed freight rail line currently under construction in Holland.
Of the 2.6km long twin tube tunnel, 1.6km is to be bored using a Herrenknecht 9.5m diameter slurry shield TBM that will erect a concrete lining leaving an i.d. of 8.6m. The remaining tunnel length will be constructed as cut and cover approaches to the bored section. The tunnel runs under the Pannerdensch Canal in the eastern region of Holland, halfway between Arnhem and Nijmegen. A bridge option was ruled out following concerns over environmental damage to the area of natural beauty.
Construction of the tunnel section is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2004.
The client for the project is Projectorganisatie Betuweroute with Arcadis and Maidl & Maidl acting as consultants.
