Polish railway infrastructure operator PKP PLK has awarded Porr two major contracts, one including construction of a 1.65km-long tunnel.

Porr will undertake the modernisation of line 108 between Jasło and Nowy Zagórz and line 104 between Rabka Zaryte and Fornale in south-east Poland.

Under the €240m line 108 contract Porr will modernise the railway infrastructure in the direction of the Bieszczady Mountains, including tunnel construction. Over a distance of 80km, a total of 18 stations and stops will be upgraded, six new stops will be built, 78 sets of points will be replaced, 80 level crossings will be rebuilt and signalling, energy and telecommunications technology replaced.

The highlight of the project is taking the tracks underground in the urban area of Krosno. The 1.65km-long tunnel will be built using open construction, around 330m of which will be constructed by cut-and-cover. Three railway tunnels and three road viaducts will also be built as part of the modernisation.

Construction is due to take around 44 months, and the first trains are scheduled to run on the new line by the end of 2028.

The upgrade of 15km of line 104 includes the electrification of the railway line and construction of station platforms.

“Polish railway construction is among the most dynamic in Europe. We are delighted to be making an important contribution to modernising the railways with our technical knowhow – especially now, where we can apply our expertise to improving transport links in the south-east and strengthening the infrastructure near the border,” said Porr CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss.
