The consultation launched by Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) relates to Enbridge Energy’s permit application for surface facilities associated with the proposed Line 5 tunnel project.

The public notice period runs from July 16 to August 29, 2025.

If constructed, the tunnel would house a proposed replacement for the more than 70-year-old Line 5 light crude oil and natural gas pipelines currently lying on the lakebed. The Straits of Mackinac connects the Great Lakes of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

In April the US Army Corps of Engineers granted national energy emergency status for the proposed 5.8km tunnel.
