Econ Corporation, Singapore’s second largest contractor, is starting work on the first 1km stage of a 20km network of utility tunnels in the island-state planned by the Urban Renewal Authority. The tunnels, the first of their kind in South East Asia, will be purpose-built to house electricity cables, telecommunication lines, water pipes and district cooling pipes. The initial system will serve property development in Singapore’s new Marina south district and is due for completion by the end of 2004. The network will run from the downtown area near Raffles Quay, to serve an area of more than 360ha.
