Construction has started in Bulgaria on the final section of Sofia’s first metro line. Metro Mladost Union (MMU), a PSI/Trace Sofia/Adval/Stroyinject joint venture, will build the new section. The construction will first focus on a section of 2.15km with two stations running to the Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard.

The construction is estimated to cost BGN 223M (USD 144M).

Last month, MMU started drilling a tunnel under the Alexander Malinov Boulevard in the Mladost Quarter.

The operational section of the first subway line currently runs from the Obelya Quarter to the Mladost Quarter through the downtown. It is 18km long and has 14 stations.

From Mladost, the line is supposed to go for another 11km and 9 more stations under the Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard to the Druzhba Quarter and then all the way to Sofia Airport. An extension will also run from Mladost 1 to Mladost 4 in the opposite direction.

The deadline for its completion is 39 months. The metro station at the Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard will also feature an underground parking facility, the first of its kind in Sofia.
