In South Africa, proposals to develop a fast rail network linking Pretoria, Johannesburg, Johannesburg International Airport and Sandton are set to move forward with a conference scheduled for next month for potential suppliers and private sector investors in the planned public-private partnership. The line between Pretoria and Johannesburg would require an 8km long bored rock tunnel. Feasibility studies by Khuthele Projects, Argus-Gibb and Lebone Engineering suggest that the line is feasible. The aim is to close a BOT deal during 2002 with the first trains scheduled to run in 2006.
