Fourteen new underground car parks are scheduled for construction in central Stockholm within the next few years and are expected to play an important role in regenerating the Swedish capital’s centre.
The car parks will provide 2500 parking places at an estimated cost of $70m, which equates to a production cost of $28 000/ parking place. Construction is planned to take place between 1999 and 2002, with work on three car parks already under way.
Nine of the underground car parks will be concrete structures and the remaining five will be built as caverns in the rock. Among the difficulties expected to be encountered are poor ground conditions, water ingress, old foundations and contaminated ground. Stockholm Parkering AB, owned by Stockholm City, will award the work by means of competitive tendering.
