Thames Water has launched a tender for the tunnelling main works contract for the Teddington Direct River Abstraction in west London.

The design, build, test and commission tender includes a recycled water conveyance tunnel from Mogden Sewage Treatment Works to Teddington. A new approximately 4.2km long tunnelled conveyance route approximately 3.5m internal diameter would be driven by a TBM and constructed to connect a new tertiary treatment plant in Mogden STW to the proposed outfall on the bank of the River Thames upstream of Teddington Weir. The tunnel would have four shafts.

It also includes a smaller diameter tunnel – up to 2.2m internal diameter – to connect the River Thames to the existing Thames Lee Tunnel for water abstraction. This tunnel will be installed by pipe jacking.

The works have an estimated value of £242m.

The NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract comprises two stages. Stage One will provide early contractor involvement during Thames Water’s planning and development consent process.

If a notice to proceed with Stage Two – delivery and construction – is issued, the contract is expected to be awarded in October next year. A water available for use target has been set for March 2033.

The award criteria are weighted 70% on quality and 30% on price.

The enquiry deadline is June 20, 2025 and the deadline for requests to participate is July 7, 2025.
