The Boring Company (TBC) is to construct its underground Loop transport system in Nashville.

The state of Tennessee is partnering with the company on the project, which will connect downtown Nashville with the airport.

TBC says construction is expected to start in autumn this year and the first section could be open as soon as spring 2026. Further segments will be operational in the fourth quarter of next year.

The company says the announcement starts the consultation process to evaluate potential routes, engage community stakeholders, and finalise plans for the project’s initial 16.1km phase.

The route, to be known as the Music City Loop, will connect downtown and the Convention Centre to Nashville International Airport, with a transit time of approximately eight minutes.

TBC says it selected Nashville because of its rapid growth, strong economic potential, and dedication to embracing smart, forward-looking infrastructure.

“The Music City Loop will remove thousands of vehicles from surface roads each day, easing traffic congestion while creating numerous job opportunities for residents across Middle Tennessee. The Loop system will also extend the lifespan of Tennessee’s roads, reduce emissions, and offer a safe, fast, and reliable travel option – particularly during major events and Nashville’s robust, year-round tourism season,” the company says in a statement.

Tennessee governor Bill Lee said the state continued to lead the way in finding creative solutions to long-standing challenges.

“By leveraging the innovation of private companies like The Boring Company, we’re exploring possibilities we couldn’t achieve on our own as a state. This potential partnership represents the kind of forward-thinking, fiscally responsible approach that will define the future of transportation in Tennessee,” he said.

The project will be fully funded by TBC and its private partners.

The company added that there was the possibility of expanding the route in future to add more than 40 stations.
