Resettlement of 1,500 families has still to take place before work can commence on the Thu Thiem tunnel in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The 1.5km tunnel under Sai Gon River is Package 4 of the East-West Highway Project that totals 22km. Once complete the 32.5m wide tunnel will have six traffic lanes and two emergency lanes. The tunnel is the first part of the project to get underway. A loan of US$380M from the Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC) is financing three quarters of the project cost.
