The US$145m contract aims to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall and sewer backups for thousands of homes. The work is expected to take 31 months and will principally involve the construction of a 2.4km-long, TBM-bored, gravity storm trunk sewer system of 4.5m diameter. The machine to bore the tunnel will be designed and manufactured by France-based Bessac.

The contract also includes:

  • Construction of 21 access shafts
  • Microtunnelling of local sections of storm sewers
  • Open-trench construction of a section of storm sewer and
  • Construction of a storm-drain outfall.

This project forms part of the City of Toronto Basement Flooding Protection Programme.
