Continental Rail Gateway (CRG) is a planned major rail tunnel project underneath the Detroit River connecting Detroit in the US and Windsor in Canada. It is being designed to handle double-stacked containers and tall rail cars.
The proposed crossing would include a 2,845m long tunnel with an 8.4m internal diameter 15m below the river. Environmental assessments and permits from both the US and Canada are expected mid-year Cree said to local media. Finalizing the funding would be the final step.
CRG is a public-private coalition called formed in 2010 that includes the Windsor Port Authority, Borealis Infrastructure Trust and Canadian Pacific. The estimated cost of the project is USD 400m. The project partners will fund 50 per cent of the project cost and the remaining half will come from government sources.
