The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) confirmed that work recommenced on 25 May 2025 after the approval of a remedial implementation plan designed to address wastewater treatment concerns. The suspension, which began on 5 May, was described as “a targeted and precautionary measure” responding to lapses in the treatment of construction-related wastewater.
The contractor, Kopano Ke Matla (KKM), has committed to adhering to the newly approved compliance measures. These include a set of interim environmental safeguards and performance protocols aimed at ensuring responsible progress on the project.
“Following weeks of sustained engagement and collaboration, the temporary suspension of certain works on the Polihali Transfer Tunnel Project was officially lifted on 23 May 2025,” the LHDA announced.
According to the authority, tunnel-related construction has now resumed in accordance with the revised compliance framework. The LHDA also emphasized that the suspension only affected specific activities, and that numerous works across the Katse and Polihali sites continued uninterrupted throughout the period.
“This milestone demonstrates the authority’s firm commitment to upholding environmental, health, and safety standards across all areas of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project,” the LHDA stated. “It also reflects the effectiveness of robust stakeholder engagement in resolving complex challenges responsibly and in the interest of project continuity.”
The LHDA extended its gratitude to the public, workers, and all stakeholders for their patience and ongoing support during the suspension period.
