The event this week, which included the ceremonial start-up of TBM Falanghina, was attended by deputy prime minister and minister of infrastructure and transport Matteo Salvini.
Ghella and Itinera are responsible for the design and construction of two of the three sections for the Campolattaro Dam, which involves the construction of a major reservoir.
Originally designed in the 1960s by the Cassa del Mezzogiorno for irrigation purposes, the project was halted, leaving it incomplete and non-operational. Now the project has been resurrected and, once completed, branch networks will extend from the reservoir to supply water resources to 20 municipalities in the Benevento area and to other aqueducts in Campania.
The first section includes the construction of a 5m-diameter diversion tunnel approximately 7.5km long; a drinking water plant with a maximum capacity of 3,000l/s; and a 30,000m³ storage tank; plus commissioning of both the drinking water plant and a hydroelectric plant.
The second section involves building a drinking water delivery line, a feeder branch, and related site works to upgrade the aqueducts in the Benevento area by laying about 110km of pipelines with diameters ranging from 400mm to 1,800mm.
The project will improve the supply of drinking water to more than 2.5 million people and provide irrigation for approximately 15,000ha of agricultural land.
