Network Rail has launched a pre-qualification notice for a tunnel and slab track package on the Transpennine Route Upgrade to accommodate larger freight trains.

The W2BC Project between Stalybridge and Huddersfield includes W12 gauge clearance in three tunnels, including the “significant lowering” of Stalybridge and Scout Tunnels and the installation of slab track to enable W12 gauge clearance.

“This is specialist due to the temporary work requirements to ensure stability of the tunnels throughout the scheme and logistical constraints due to the location of the tunnels,” the contract notice says.

The scope of works also includes line speed increases; substantial changes to four stations; significant volumes of track renewals; signalling work; and full route electrification and additional capacity provided by a new third line from Standedge to Gledholt.

Stalybridge and Scout Tunnels require significant lowering and the installation of slab track to enable W12 gauge clearance. This is specialist because of the temporary work requirements to ensure stability of the tunnels throughout the scheme and the logistical constraints of the tunnels’ locations.

The estimated contract dates are April 30, 2027 to April 27, 2035.

The W2BC is part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, a set of enhancement schemes across the north of England aimed at improving economic growth.

The submission deadline is July 10, 2026. At least four suppliers will be invited to tender.
