Tunnelling has commenced on the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project in South Australia.

The project’s first TBM, Mary, has started excavating one of the 4.5km Southern Tunnels from the Southern Precinct at Clovelly Park.

The project’s second TBM, Catherine, will soon launch from the Southern Precinct to excavate the second parallel 4.5km Southern Tunnel.

Further north, the third TBM, Elizabeth, will launch from the project’s Central North Precinct at Hilton to construct the 2.2m Northern Tunnels.

The 15m-diameter TBMs will operate around the clock and advance approximately 8-10m per day to build South Australia’s first major road tunnels.

The A$15.4bn (€9.35bn) T2D project is the final 10.5km section of the North-South Corridor, and will complete 78km of non-stop, traffic light-free motorway between Gawler and Old Noarlunga.
